Thank you, Alma

Thank you, Alma

I’m pleasantly surprised.  Times reporter Alma Gaul has two excellent stories about the “Food Forest” project in the Garden Addition.  The story about the recent planting of nut bearing trees is interesting and has heartwarming photography, but her side story about former City Designer Darrin Nordahl is even better.  Darrin’s stay in Davenport expanded many people’s horizons, with a thoughtful approach to improving quality of life through time-tested urban design.

Darrin has returned to his native California, but Alma’s story reconnects Darrin to his many friends he made in Davenport, and recounts how Davenport changed Darrin’s life.  It’s a lovely piece of journalism, telling the tale of how place influences people, and people influence place, and how both people and place are better for opening themselves to experience.

Thank you, Alma, for bringing back a friend for Sunday breakfast.  Don’t yet give up on the pushpin.
